Sparrow-peace warrior 2015
Swiss artist Nina Staehli creates highly iconic works that address social and political tensions. The head sculpture Sparrow, a monumental Big Head figure from her film “Glory Land”, which has been traveling as an advocate for peace in the USA and Europe since 2015 – equipped with a combat suit and a white flag.
With this figure, Staehli not only illuminates the symbolic dichotomy between aggression and peace but also invites a critical dialogue about the conditions and possibilities of sustainable peace in an increasingly polarized world.
The combat suit refers to confrontation, the willingness and necessity to actively deal with the challenges of our time. It symbolizes strength and resilience but also refers to the martial aspects of social conflicts. In contrast, Sparrow carries the white flag – a universal symbol of peace, surrender or dialog. This tense combination makes Sparrow a changing metaphor for the internal and external struggle for peace, reconciliation and understanding.
