Flashes of Guns, 2021
The female figure, trapped in an externally controlled system, is bound by hoses and cables. Muzzle flashes break through the darkness, yet the conflicts they symbolize remain distant, experienced second-hand, yet entangling. The dripping black paint recalls oil or blood, a paralyzing, unstoppable flow of violence and the draining of hope. Weapons destroy what matters most – quality of life, life, freedom – and leave behind a world of destruction, external control, and alienation.
The basis of my drawings are magazine pages and (advertising) posters in various sizes, including large-format works. I redraw them using alcohol and acrylic markers, sprays, oil, and acrylic paints. The original motifs are alienated, erased, and supplemented with new elements, making the templates almost unrecognizable. The superficial world of advertising transforms into my own worlds with symbolic meaning. A new, multi-layered reality emerges, where the protagonists convey intense emotions – comparable to different states of matter – and exist detached in their own cosmos.
