DO YOU HATE US ? 1999-2025
In March and June 1999, NATO launched Operation Allied Force, a 78-day air campaign against the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia in response to the ongoing Kosovo War. This operation, which involved over 38,000 sorties, was intended to halt the humanitarian crisis in Kosovo and compel the Yugoslav government to stop its crackdown on ethnic Albanians. The air strikes lasted from 24 March 1999 to 10 June 1999. The bombings continued until an agreement was reached that led to the withdrawal of the Yugoslav Army from Kosovo, and the establishment of the United Nations Interim Administration Mission in Kosovo, a UN peacekeeping mission in Kosovo.
On 20 March 1999, Yugoslav forces began a massive campaign of repression and expulsions of Kosovar Albanians following the withdrawal of the OSCE Kosovo Verification Mission (KVM) and the failure of the proposed Rambouillet Agreement. In response to this, NATO intervened with an aerial bombing campaign that began on March 24, justifying it on humanitarian grounds. The war ended with the Kumanovo Agreement, signed on 9 June 1999, with Yugoslav and Serb forces agreeing to withdraw from Kosovo to make way for an international presence. The NATO bombing campaign has remained controversial.
The International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia convicted six Serb/Yugoslav officials and one Albanian for war crimes.
